You CANNOT start a bee colony with just a queen! A queen accompanied by a few attendants cannot establish a colony. To build a healthy hive, you’ll need a Nuc of bees, which includes a minimum of 10,000 bees. Learn more here.

Our Breeding Standards
Our Carniolan Queens come from leading Hungarian breeders using pedigree lines. These premium genetics ensure queens with exceptional productivity and temperament.

Important Notes
🐝 Acceptance Is Not Guaranteed: A queen may be rejected by your colony even when our instructions are followed. This is beyond our control, and we cannot offer replacements or refunds in such cases.
Cancellations: Any cancelled queen orders incur a £5 restocking/admin fee per queen. This helps us manage these living creatures responsibly and offsets admin and processing fees.

About the Carniolan Breed
The Carniolan honey bee (Apis mellifera carnica Pollman) is a subspecies of the western honey bee. The Carniolan honey bee is native to Slovenia and to some regions of the former Yugoslavia, southern Austria, and parts of Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria.

The bee is the subspecies of the Western honey bee that has naturalized and adapted to the Kočevje (Gottschee) sub-region of Carniola (now in Slovenia), the southern part of the Austrian Alps and the northern Balkans. These bees are known as Carniolans, or "Carnies" for short, in English. At present this subspecies is the second most popular among beekeepers (after the Italian bee). It is favoured among beekeepers for several reasons, not the least being its ability to defend itself successfully against insect pests while at the same time being extremely gentle in its behaviour toward beekeepers. These bees are particularly adept at adjusting worker population to nectar availability. It relies on these rapid adjustments of population levels to rapidly expand worker bee populations after nectar becomes available in the spring, and, again, to rapidly cut off brood production when nectar ceases to be available in quantity. It meets periods of high nectar with high worker populations and consequently stores large quantities of honey and pollen during those periods. They are resistant to some diseases and parasites that can debilitate hives of other subspecies.

Queen Bee Terms

From October 2025 we’ll be updating how we manage Queen Bee orders. These changes are based on many years of experience and are designed to help us provide a fair, reliable, and consistent service for all our customers.

1. Dynamic Pricing
- Queens available earlier in the season (from late March) will be a little higher in price.
- This is because supply is very limited at this point, costs from our suppliers are higher, and it’s the busiest time of the year for our team.
- Prices naturally reduce as the season progresses and supply increases.

2. Deposits & Cancellations
- Each Queen Bee order will now include a 10% deposit of the order subtotal.
- If you need to cancel your order, this deposit will be retained.
- This helps us cover the preparation and allocation work already carried out and replaces the old £5 per Queen cancellation fee.

3. Dispatch Date Changes
- We carefully plan Queen allocations week by week to make sure everyone receives what they ordered.
- If you need to move your order to a different allocation week, a 10% admin fee will apply.
- Date changes within the same allocation week are absolutely fine and won’t incur any charge.
- A full breakdown of costs for changes or cancellations is available if you’d like more detail.

4. Queen Acceptance & Replacements
- Please remember that Queen acceptance is never 100% guaranteed, and a number of factors outside our control can affect results.
Common issues include:
- Introducing a Queen into a colony that already has a residing Queen (often hidden).
- Colonies that are in the process of raising their own Queen cells.
- Aggressive or stressed colonies that are less willing to accept a new Queen.
- Environmental pressures, such as poor weather or disturbance around the hive.
- If a Queen has not escaped her cage, this almost always points to an underlying problem within the colony rather than the Queen herself.
- We do replace dead-on-arrival Queens, provided our Queen Claim Form has been completed.

5. Scheduled Dispatch Dates
- The dispatch date you select is a scheduled date. As Queens are living creatures and supply chains can shift, unexpected delays are sometimes unavoidable.
- If this happens, we’ll notify you by email as quickly as possible.
- To avoid any disruption to your colonies, we strongly recommend waiting until you receive your confirmed shipment email before making hive changes such as queen removal or nuc creation.

6. Postal Delays (Royal Mail)
- If your Queen is delayed in the post, please complete the Queen Claim Form.
- While we do our very best to package Queens securely, we rely on Royal Mail as a third-party delivery service, so we unfortunately can’t take responsibility for any delays on their side.

7. Customer Behaviour Policy
From 2026 we’ll also be introducing a Customer Behaviour Policy.
- This helps us set clear standards for how we communicate with one another.
- It ensures we can respond to all enquiries in a professional, consistent, and fair way.
- The policy applies to all interactions with BS Honey Bees Ltd and our team.
